A True Island Master
On the beach at Thong Nai Pan Noi, Koh Phangan, Mr Big has spent close to two decades earning a reputation across the island for his artistic ability and hand-tapping skill. When travellers pass through — some returning 18 years apart — his studio is a Thong Nai Pan institution.
Each tattoo is done using completely original materials. The bamboo stick and needle are never re-used — clean, sterile and done properly, the way sacred work should be.
Why Bamboo, Not Machine
Getting a bamboo tattoo isn't just a cultural experience — it heals remarkably fast. You can be out in the sun the next day and swimming within 24 hours, versus 5–7 days for a machine tattoo. No fun losing half your holiday to healing.
Bamboo causes less damage to the skin, so there's little blood and the ink settles in more easily — resulting in longer-lasting, more vibrant tattoos. Every city on earth has countless machine shops; why not get something different, unique and hand-made?
Cover-ups, Restorations & Teaching
Got a tattoo when you were younger that you're no longer happy with? Big can fix bad or faded work, or cover an old piece with something new.
For those who want to learn the craft, Big also teaches bamboo tattooing — and can provide food and accommodation for the full authentic apprenticeship experience.
